Biographical Note:

Miles Cary Eggleston was born on February 26, 1791, in Amelia County, Virginia. He attended William and Mary College where he studied law. After graduating in 1815, Eggleston moved to the Indiana Territory. He settled in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, and began a law practice. In 1817, he was admitted to the Indiana bar, moved to Franklin County, and became the prosecuting attorney there the following year. In 1819, Eggleston was elected presiding judge of the 3rd Judicial Circuit and retained the office until December 4, 1844, when he resigned. He continued to practice law after leaving the bench. In 1841, he was appointed to the Indiana University Board of Trustees and served on the Board until 1848. He died on July 19, 1851, in Bedford Springs, Kentucky.

Scope and Content Note:

The collection contains a photocopy of a Role and Record of Attorneys compiled at the request of Miles Eggleston when he was judge of the 3rd Circuit Court of Indiana. It lists the attorneys licensed to practice law in the state of Indiana from the years 1844 to 1851. Also included is information regarding who granted their licenses and when.
