Biographical Note:

John Barrett Cockrum was born on September 12, 1857, near Oakland City, Indiana. He became a school teacher, but studied law during the summer until eventually entering the Cincinnati Law School. In 1879, Cockrum graduated and was admitted to the bar. He began practicing law with Charles W. Armstrong in Booneville, Indiana. On January 22, 1880, he married Josephine “Fannie” Bittrolff with whom he had two children. He became assistant U.S. District Attorney for Indiana in 1889 and served in that post until 1893. Cockrum then took a position as general counsel for the Lake Erie Railroad and was employed as a lawyer with various railroad companies thereafter. He died on April 15, 1937.

Scope and Content Note:

The collection consists of a letter from John Cockrum to his son, Oatley Cockrum, who was living in New Haven, Connecticut at the time. The letter gives Oatley words of advice and support.
