Biographical Note:

Joseph H. Shea was born in Lexington, Indiana in 1862 to parents Patrick and Bridget Shea. He received his A.B. degree from Indiana University in 1889 and admitted to the bar at Scottsburg in 1889. Shea also practiced law in Seymour, Indiana and later in Indianapolis. He began his public service as a prosecuting attorney and twice served as circuit judge. Shea served as Ambassador to Chile (1916 – 1921) on the recommendation by Vice President Thomas R. Marshall. Joseph H. Shea died in 1928, and is buried in Madison, Indiana.

Scope and Content:

The collection consists of correspondence with Joseph H. Shea (1890 – 1918, bulk 1916) relating to Democratic politics, his time served as U.S. Ambassador to Chile, and general topics. Included are photographs and various printed material. Additionally, the collection contains one folder relating to Julia Shea’s papers (1921 – 1959). Noted correspondents include Harry S. New and John W. Kern.
