Rodney C. Perkins was born on November 15, 1905 in the Irvington neighborhood of Indianapolis. He graduated from Shortridge High School in 1924 and Butler University in 1931. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps for eight years, serving at camps in Rising Sun, Brookville, and Kurtz. After serving in World War II, he returned to Indiana and worked as an instructor at Butler and Indiana University Bloomington. He worked for the Post Office in Cincinnati, Ohio, for 23 years, retiring in 1971.

The collection includes a typescript of Camp and Community, an unpublished novel about the Civilian Conservation Corps written by Perkins. Additionally, there are two oral histories of Perkins. Subjects include the Great Depression, the Irvington neighborhood, Butler University, and the Irvington Presbyterian Church.
