Biographical Note:

Cornelius H. Menger served as a caption in France during World War 1 (1917 – 1919). Following the war, Menger returned to the U.S., where he worked in the ordinance department, stationed in Louisiana, Massachusetts, and Alabama (1919 – 1928). In 1920, Menger married Jean Hornstein, whom he met before the war while working in New York City. In 1929, Menger took up employment with the Alabama Power Company (1929 – 1932ish), while continuing to serve as an officer in the Army Reserve, stationed at Fort Sheridan, Illinois and Fort Knox, Kentucky. After his time with the Alabama Power Company, Menger worked with the National Park Service and later with the International Harvester in Indianapolis (1936 – 1939).

Scope and Content Note:

The collection primarily consists of correspondence to Jean Hornstein Menger from her husband Cornelius H. Menger. The letters date from when Cornelius served as captain in World War 1, and continue through after his time in the armed service (1917 to 1940). Letters from Menger originate from France, New York City, Boston, Washington D.C., Birmingham, Cleveland, Columbus, Pensacola, Omaha, and Indianapolis. Also included are letters to Mrs. Menger, then Jean Hornstein, from other World War 1 soldiers.
