Edward Beecher Bender, son of Peter H. and Margarett A. Beck Bender, was born in Zionsville Indiana on December 7, 1872. The family moved to a farm just outside of Zionsville when Bender was two years old. After graduating from Zionsville High School in 1894, he obtained a teaching license. He then attended DePauw and Indiana Universities, earning an A. B. in 1901. He married Annie Ellen Smith on September 6, 1899, with which he had three son, Ranald, Smith, and Robert Bender. He married Alma Sickler in 1931, and Lucille Starkey. Bender was a farmer, and merchant, owner of Beecher and Laycock Hardware. He was founder and director of the Boone County Rural Electric Membership Cooperative, R.E.M.C., from 1936 to 1966. Bender served in the Indiana Legislature in 1923, 1925, and 1927. He died January 23, 1971.

This collection contains a transcript of an oral history tape made with Tom Krasean, Indiana State Library. Bender discusses growing up on a farm, his association with the Ku Klux Klan and Indiana politics during the 1920s, the Boone County R.E.M.C. and farming in the 1960s.
