Biographical Note:

Robert Welsh Allen was born in Shelby County, Kentucky on March 25, 1817.  His parents, James Allen and Elizabeth Logan moved to Indiana, along with their children, sometime before 1846.  Robert Allen was married to Margaret Ann Maxwell on April 6, 1846.  Robert and Margaret had six children over the course of twenty years.  Allen’s career was as a minister but his religion is unknown.  Robert Welsh Allen died on July 29, 1882 in Jacksonville, Indiana. 

Research suggests that the recipient of the letter, James Allen, is brother to Robert Welsh Allen.  James Logan Allen was born on October 9, 1809 in Shelby County, Kentucky.  He was married on an unknown date to Caroline Foote.  James Allen died on September 29, 1858 in Rockville, Parke County, Indiana.

Scope and Content Note:

This collection contains one letter from R[obert] W. Allen to James Allen written on November 26, 1851.  The letter discusses the flu outbreak and that Frankfort, Indiana has been spared the worst of the flu.  The incidence of death was low and there were few who contracted the illness.  Also discussed are community members and their well being along with the hopes of a railroad passing through Rockville and connecting with Lafayette.
