Historical Note:

As part of the Indiana State Museum’s 1979 celebration of the bicentennial of George Rogers Clark’s victory at Vincennes, a committee was established in 1978 to locate the descendants of Clark, members of his family, and the men who served with him at Vincennes and at other times during the American Revolution.

Source: Indiana State Library, Genealogy Division. (1979). Indiana State Museum George Rogers Clark Bicentennial Celebration. Contents list.

Scope and Content Note:

This collection includes research materials gathered by the George Rogers Clark Bicentennial Descendents Committee, as well as correspondence, lineage charts, and supporting evidence mailed to the committee by people who wished to be recognized as descendents of Clark’s family or soldiers.  The collection brings together two separate files: papers regarding the Clark family and its descendents, collected by Helen Noland; and papers regarding the men who served with George Rogers Clark and their descendents, compiled by Caroline Dunn.

Introductory material include programs and invitations from the bicentennial celebration, minutes and press releases of the Descendents Committees, and master lists of descendents of Clark’s family and of the men who served with Clark.

In addition to the material sent to the committee by descendents, the Clark family papers collected by Helen Noland include photocopies of several published articles about the family and manuscript genealogical papers, and two genealogical charts.

Papers collected by Caroline Dunn regarding the descendants of men who served with Clark include papers of some earlier investigations of the descendents of Clark’s men, collected by Helen Noland, June Barekman, and the DAR, along with material sent to the committee by descendents. A card file in box 2 lists all descendents under their revolutionary ancestors, as well as listing all descendents who were residents of Indiana by town.  Name and address information of descendents is included.

Manuscript materials CANNOT be photocopied or digitized in their entirety. Photocopies and/or digital images cannot exceed 25% of a collection or a folder within a collection.
