Biographical Note:

Nellie Belles was born in Indiana around 1856.  She was married twice.  Her first husband was Jack Hill, an artist.  Her second husband was Maurice Macmillan, a publisher, whom she met and married while in Europe.

Her father, Joshua Tarleton Belles, was born in Indiana in 1826.  He lived in Spencer, Indiana, where he worked as a doctor.

Scope and Content Note:

This collection contains letters written by Mrs. Maurice MacMillan (Nellie Belles) to her father, Dr. J. T. Belles, which were published in a local Spencer, Indiana newspaper between 1877-1885.  In her letters, MacMillan describers her travels throughout Europe.  She also discusses her wedding and honeymoon plans.  This collection also contains the obituaries of Dan and Charles Glacier, as well as L.M. Anderson.
