Biographical Note:

John Coburn was an Indianapolis attorney; colonel, 33rd Indiana Regiment (1861-1864), general (1865); Whig, member Indiana House of representatives (1850-1851); Republican, member U.S. House of Representatives (1867-1875), serving as chairman of the Committee on Military Affairs and on the Committee on Banking and Currency; justice, Montana Territory Supreme Court (1884-1885).

Scope and Content Note:

The collection includes 9 of Coburn’s letter books (1879-1903), chiefly relating to his Indianapolis law practice, but also including letters on Republican Party politics, local civic activities, and Indiana history; correspondence regarding political appointments, and his work on banking and military affairs; other correspondence regarding politics; correspondence and financial papers relating to the settlement of the estate of Augustus Coburn, including papers relating to land in Ontonagon County, Michigan, and mining claims in the west (1850-1865). Coburn’s memorandum books contain addresses, legal case notes, receipts, and cures for diseases (1904-1905); a scrapbook of the 1867 political campaign; Coburn’s account book (1865); an article by Coburn on riots in Indianapolis and other Indiana towns during the Civil War; and notes and drafts of speeches. Correspondents include Roscoe Conkling, Frederick T. Frelinghuysen, James A. Garfield, Benjamin Harrison, William Tecumseh Sherman, Daniel W. Voorhees, and Lew Wallace.
