Manuscript & Rare Books Division
Indiana State Library
Processed by: Philip N. Williams, 1998
Alexander Scott Dowling was the grandson of J.A. Scott, a captain in the Civil War, whose experiences inspired Auto-Biography of a Civil War Veteran, which is found in the collection. Dowling was student attending school at the time he wrote the works in the collection. He was an active member of the Boy Scouts of America, which is the subject of Under the Four, the third novel found in the collection.
This collection includes bound carbon typescripts of three novels, two essays, and seven poems and is dated 1918 on the cover. However, an inscription on the inside cover is dated June 12, 1919, and the preface to Under the Four is dated Dec. 28, 1919.
This bound collection contains three novels: Auto-Biography of a Civil War Veteran, about a cadet in military academy who graduates to the Civil War; Under the Four, or How a Scout Made Good, adventures with the Boy Scouts of America; and Chaucawama, a story of the Mohawk Indians. The collection also contains two essays: “B.S. of A.” about the Boy Scouts of America, and “Education.” The collection closes with seven poems: “Labor,” “The Red and the Rose,” The Memory of R__,” The Message of R__,” “Spring,” “Night,” and “The Gate of Life.”
