Bath County, Kentucky to Montgomery County, Indiana
Manuscripts & Rare Books Division
Indiana State Library
Processed by: Amy C. Belcher, September 2003
In this collection there are many land deeds being transacted between many different people. In 1847, David McCafferty sold Jesse Mcalister land in Montgomery County, Indiana. Little is known about either of these men, but it is believed that Mcalister was from Kentucky, around the Bath County region. The next earliest deeds are those of Benjamin and George Knox, both of Bath County, Kentucky. These transactions occurred in Kentucky in the 1850s. In early 1870s, Edward P. Rutledge and his wife Elvira transacted with Jesse Riggins a sale of land in Montgomery and Boone counties. Both of these families also have ties to Kentucky, especially Elvira Rutledge, whose family spent time in Bath County, Kentucky before she was born. Minerva Riggins, Jesse’s wife, also had ties to Kentucky through her family. A deed overseen by Jesse Riggins was completed in 1880 between the Powell families in Montgomery County. The Powell family’s connection to Kentucky or lack thereof is unknown. The final deed in the collection is that of Jesse and Minerva Riggins selling land to Henry H. Knox and his sisters in Montgomery County, Indiana. The Knox family has ties to Kentucky as well, as they were all born there, however, the actual county of birth is unknown. The last document, a burial plot purchase slip is included for a Samuel Knox. Samuel Knox was born in Kentucky, although the county and township are unknown.
This collection consists mostly of deeds of sale. Many of these deeds are for land in Montgomery County, Indiana. One deed refers to land in Montgomery and Boone Counties in Indiana. Two of the deeds refer to land being sold to Knox family members in Bath County, Kentucky. Also, in the collection, is a personal letter belonging to one of the deed purchasers, J. Mcalister. There are two documents referring to land survey in connection with some of these purchased lands as well. Finally, there is a document showing the purchase of a burial lot from the Shannondale Cemetery Association by Samuel Knox in 1911.
