According to the 1850 and 1860 Indiana Federal Censuses, William H. Hulley was born in 1844 in England. He was the oldest of 10 children born to William Hulley and Mary Ann Ramsey Somerville. The William Hulley family lived in Switzerland County, Indiana and this is where William H. was living when he enlisted as a Civil War soldier in the 3rd Indiana Cavalry on March 10th, 1863. William H. died during the war on May 8, 1863.
Longtime neighbors of the Hulley’s in Switzerland County were the Barney Farrell family. Barney and his wife, Elizabeth, had at least 12 children. Three of the Farrell sons enlisted in the 3rd Indiana Cavalry, Co. A. They were Silas and John, twins, and Hannibal. All three mustered in on Aug. 22, 1861.
