Biographical Note:

D.J. Baker’s Cash Grocery dealt in fine groceries and notions from its location in Mt. Jackson, Marion County, Indiana.

Scope and Content Note:

Collection S1995 is an advertising card for both a local business and a national manufacturer, circa 1891.  One side of the cards shows a scene entitled “La Flute Pastorale.”  This is a tinted drawing of two young women together at a fountain.  The advertising copy reads: “Use Gloss Soap!  Made honestly…Does Hard Works…A Splendid Washer…No More Yellow Clothes.”  The copy goes on to say:  “Mail us 25 Wrappers with your full address and we will send the ‘Snow Boy,’ our newest picture.  Lautz Bros. & Co., Buffalo, N.Y.”

The advertising copy for Lautz Bros. continues on to the side of the card which gives the name, merchandise and address of D.J. Baker’s Cash Grocery.  The copy concludes:  “Use Gloss Soap…A Splendid Washer!  Makes Dirt Fly!  Made Honestly and Will Honest Work.”  “The Snow Boy” picture-offer from Lautz Bros. & Co. of Buffalo, N.Y. is repeated a second time on the other side of the card.
