Biographical Note:

Daniel Yandes was born near Uniontown, Fayette County, Pennsylvania on January 28, 1793 and was the son of Simon and Anna Catherine (Rider) Yandes.  He served as a volunteer in the War of 1812 and was elected major of his regiment.  Yandes married Anna Wilson in 1815 and worked in a flour mill and a coal mine.  Together Daniel and Anna had eleven children, five of which died young.  The children who lived to adulthood were: Simon, James, Mary, Elizabeth, Catherine, and George.  Anna W. Yandes passed away in 1851.

In 1818 Yandes and his family, including his widowed mother, moved to Fayette County, Indiana near present day Connersville.  In 1821 he moved to Indianapolis with his family.  He established the county’s first tannery with John Wilkins in 1823.  Later, Yandes continued the same business with his nephew Lafayette Yandes.  After Lafayette died, Yandes continued this business with his nephew Daniel Yandes, Jr. and James C. Parmalee and the business expanded to Brown County and the selling of leather goods.

In 1825 Yandes partnered with Franklin Merrill in a mercantile store.  He partnered with Edward T. Porter in 1831 in another store.   He also began a saw mill and cotton mill with William Sheets.  He built the first paper mills in Indianapolis and Lafayette.  Yandes built ten miles of Madison and Indianapolis railroad in 1847.  He also took part the management of a furnace at Brazil, Indiana.  Daniel Yandes died June 10, 1878.
