According to information contained in the Indianapolis City Directories, the Indiana Mirror Company began business in Indianapolis, Indiana between 1904 and 1905. The original president of the company was A. Lehman. The company’s main purpose was to make mirrors for wholesale to other companies. The glass the employees worked with was sometimes purchased from other businesses such as the Libbey-Owens-Ford Glass Company in Toledo, Ohio. The Indiana Mirror Company then added the backing to the glass to give it the mirrored finish. The company had many steady employees and had some part time salesman that worked on commission, as well.
This collection contains business papers of the Indiana Mirror Company. The majority of the files are inventories and statistical analyses of the company, its finances and its materials. Some statistics start as far back as 1911. However, most of the statistics and information dates fall between 1935 and 1954. The collection also includes payroll records from 1948-1952. Within the payroll records, there is information about specific employees; they give most employees’ birth dates and job descriptions. Other employee information included within the collection is their withholding exemption certificates, which are in the collection for the dates 1943-1952. Copies of the Census of Manufactures that Indiana Mirror Company filed are also present in the collection for some years. There is some basic business correspondence for the company included as well as some price guides for other companies in similar fields.
The last part of the collection is some personal paperwork of one of the company’s employees, Ralph La Gratta. These records include tax forms. They also include some immigration and personal information about Ralph La Gratta and his wife, as well as their son Joseph.
