Edmund Engle grew up and lived most of his life in Winchester, IN. Engle married Gertrude Bishop on Oct. 15, 1856 in Randolph County. He enlisted into the IN 124th Regiment on Feb. 20, 1864. He left Camp [Berne], Indiana, on March 18, 1864 and headed to Nashville, TN. The IN 124th Regiment marched through Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, and the Carolinas during its tour of duty, and was involved in the Battle of Franklin, the Battle of Nashville, the Battle of Wise’s Fork, and was present at the surrender of Johnston’s army. Engle mustered out on Aug. 31, 1865. The total casualty of the IN 124th was 155.
The collection contains Photostats of muster rolls, a marriage license, and other government papers of Capt. Edmund Engle. Along with the official military documents, the collection also contains four diaries written by Engle. The diaries span from 1864 to 1866 and focuses primarily on his day-to-day activities like marching, encampment, and the general health of other soldiers.
