Biographical Note:
William R. Harley was born in Delphi, Indiana in 1894 or 1895 to Charley and Mary Raney Harley. He graduated from Delphi High School in 1912. He attended Wabash College from which he graduated with degrees in English and Journalism in 1916. He worked as a journalist for the Kokomo Tribune and The Indianapolis News. He was a teacher of journalism at both the University of Kansas at Lawrence, and Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. He wrote editorials for newspapers in Los Angeles, Boston and Dayton, Ohio. William R. Harley died in Dayton in 1947.
Scope and Content Note:
The collection consists mainly of the unpublished manuscript for a book William R. Harley had written, “Behind the Ku Klux Klan.” It also includes some pages that had been edited and removed from the manuscript. Each chapter includes a separate section of footnotes. Also included is a synopsis of the book to present to publishers. A letter regarding Harley’s publisher difficulties is also included, dated the same year as his death. The box that contained the manuscript is also present in the collection.
