Biographical Note:

Samuel Moore was born in Albemarle Sound, Perquimans County, North Carolina on January 21, 1799.  He came to Indiana in 1818 and founded the town of Mooresville, Morgan County, Indiana in 1824.  He married Eliza Worthington in 1828. He was the owner of a dry goods store, was involved in pork packing and shipment of agricultural products to Cincinnati and New Orleans; he also operated a grist mill near Mooresville.   Samuel Moore died March 1, 1889.

Scope and Content Note:

This collection contains the business and personal papers and correspondence of Samuel Moore.  The papers include information on Moore’s dry goods store, indentures, deeds, transportation expenses for goods, stock certificates, and investment papers.  Also included, are family correspondence, a diary, correspondence regarding state and national politics, the Whig Party, and the work of the Indiana legislature.

Correspondents include Hervey Bates, 19 June 1843, 19 Apr. 1845, 31 Mar. 1850, 14 Apr. 1851, 26 Apr. 1851, and 29 Aug. 1851, Thomas H. Blake, 4 Feb. 1829, Jesse D. Bright, 9 Nov. 1843,  James F.D. Lanier, 17 Jan. 1845, Nicholas McCarty, 24 Aug. 1842, Joseph Moore, 28 Dec. 1872 and 16 Oct. 1885, and David Wallace, 7 July 1841.
