Shepard and Kernan to Co-Chair Blue-Ribbon Commission on Local Government Reform

On July 18, Governor Mitch Daniels announced the establishment of the Commission on Local Government Reform. The bi-partisan commission will examine reforming and restructuring local government to find long-term solutions to the current property tax dilemma. The commission will report its findings and recommendations by late December in time for the Indiana General Assembly to discuss during the 2008 legislative session. The State Library's Unserved Areas Task Force will be asked to expedite their research and recommendations for resolving the unserved areas issue in order to provide suggestions to the Commission.

The Indiana statewide library community should retain a positive outlook for the future of library services and take advantage of this opportunity to improve efficiency and address long-standing issues facing Indiana libraries. While the Commission will not make policy, its findings may influence the decisions made by the Indiana General Assembly in 2008. Through keeping an optimistic and open line of communication with the Commission, Indiana's library community can clearly illustrate its purpose and help facilitate positive change.

Below you will find both the Governor's announcement and his charge to the new Commission. The State Library will keep the state's library community abreast of new developments and findings by the Commission, the State Library, and statewide library task forces.
