  • Position Title: Indianapolis Commercial Birth/Death Index Databases, Data Entry Assistant

  • Date & Time: Long-term position. Flexible shifts are available for volunteers during the Library's normal
    hours of operation Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. 4:30 p.m. Virtual volunteering available.

  • Position Summary: The Indiana State Library is creating both birth and death index databases based
    on information taken from the Indianapolis Commercial Newspaper. This newspaper is a business publication
    containing only statistics. Volunteers enter information into the database from photocopies of birth and death
    lists taken from the Indianapolis Commercial Newspaper.

  • Major Responsibilities: Data entry

  • Qualifications: The ability to follow directions, work independently, attention to detail, accurate, responsible, dependable, and typing skills. Candidate must be able to volunteer at least eight (8) hours per month.

  • Project Completion Date: The death portion may be done including updates in a little over a year. The birth
    portion could take 2 more years.

Great Hall

  • Position Title: Great Hall Desk Volunteer

  • Date & Time: Long-term position. Flexible shifts are available for volunteers during the Library's normal
    hours of operation Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. 4:30 p.m.

  • Position Summary: Act as first contact person and provide basic information about the library and the
    Government Center to people who are entering the library off the Senate Avenue entrance.  This person will
    also work on data entry projects. This is a great opportunity to interact with visitors in variety of situations.
    You will serve as an ambassador for the Indiana State Library. This assignment will give you the opportunity
    to develop customer service skills.

  • Major Responsibilities: Keep track of programs and meeting occurring in the library using the Internal Calendar, know or be able to find out, which Government Center building a customer service office is located, be ready to contact library personnel when a person they are meeting with has arrived, and be able to tell patrons about the history of the Library and its collections.

  • Qualifications: Accurate, Responsible, Outgoing

Indiana Historical Bureau

  • Position Title: Indiana Historical Bureau Volunteer

  • Date & Time: Long-term position. Flexible shifts are available for volunteers during the Library's normal hours of operation Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. 4:30 p.m.

  • Agency Summary:  The Indiana Historical Bureau provides publications, programs, and other opportunities for Indiana citizens of all ages to learn and teach about the history of their communities, the state of Indiana, and their relationships to the nation and the world. The Indiana Historical Bureau administers the Indiana Historical marker Program and manages the Indiana Governors' Portraits Collection. www.IN.gov/ihb

  • Position Summary:: The volunteers we are looking for would be a Jack's or Jill's of all trades who would help us with numerous fun jobs such as sales in our shop and giving tours of our area. If you are interested in volunteering with fun, friendly people in an exciting historically significant environment, then this is the place for you. We can provide you not only with job experience in a warm caring environment, but also a good reference upon satisfactory completion of your time here. We are located in the Indiana State Library  and Historical Building on 140 N Senate Ave and are open 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m Monday - Friday except state holidays and have volunteer house available during that time period.

  • Date & Time: Long-term position. Flexible shifts are available for volunteers during the Library's normal hours of operation Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. 4:30 p.m.

  • Project Description:  Through the generous support from the Ruth Lilly Philanthropic Foundation the Indiana State Library's Talking Books and Braille Library will focus on recording books and magazine articles with Indiana connections that are otherwise unavailable in an audio format. We have two soundproof recording booths and digital recording equipment. These new materials will enable volunteer narrators to record books and magazine articles with maximum clarity and quality. The Talking Books project will greatly rely on the efforts of volunteers. Talking Books seeks volunteer narrators, monitors, and reviewers to begin production.

  • Position Summary:  To help record books and magazines of Indiana interest for the talking Books program which is
    a part of the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped.

  • Major Responsibilities: Operate the recording equipment during a recording session. Follow the narrator using a second copy of the text. Maintain quality control during the recording session. Must work a s a team with the Narrator.

  • Qualifications: Ability to use a PC and learn new programs. Posses a good "ear" for mispronunciations.

  • Qualifications: Must have a strong, clear and agreeable voice. Must be capable of presenting an intelligible and sincere
    reflection of the author's intent.

  • Date & Time: Long-term position. Flexible shifts are available for volunteers during the Library's normal hours of operation Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. 4:30 p.m.

  • Major Responsibilities: Listen for pronunciation, word performance, technical errors, and listen for additions or omissions in the recording.

  • Qualifications: Possess a good "ear" for finding mispronunciations and other mistakes in the recording.

  • Position Title: Tape Duplication

  • Date & Time: Long-term position. Flexible shifts are available for volunteers during the Library's normal hours of operation Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. 4:30 p.m.

  • Position Summary: The Indiana Talking Book and Braille Library provides materials to those Hoosier citizens who are blind or have a physical disability that prevents them from reading standard print material. The Library maintains and circulates thousands of books and magazines on tape, in Braille and in large print. The Library also provides support services and educational programs. Currently, the Talking Book & Braille Library is looking for an individual to assist with many of the Library's daily clerical duties. Flexible shifts are available for volunteers during the Library's normal hours of operation Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. 4:30 p.m.

  • Major Responsibilities: Volunteer will use 2 and 4 track duplicators to copy books and magazines on cassette.  Also entails labeling cassettes and conducting spot tests to ensure quality copying.

  • Position Title:  Index to Indiana Mortality Schedules 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 - Data Entry Assistant

  • Date & Time: Long-term position. Flexible shifts are available for volunteers during the Library's normal hours of operation Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. 4:30 p.m. Virtual volunteering available.

  • Project Description: The VINE (Vital INformation Exchange) is a collaborative statewide database that pulls together Indiana-related local history and vital record indexes from the collections of Indiana’s public libraries, historical societies, genealogy societies, and related agencies.  The goal of the project is to allow genealogy and local history researchers to quickly and effectively locate free Indiana-related vital records information from one centralized online location.

  • Position Summary:  Information from the index to the Indiana Mortality Schedules will be entered into an Excel template. This information is currently in a print, multi- volume format.

  • Major Responsibilities: Data entry

  • Qualifications: The ability to follow directions, work independently, attention to detail, accurate, responsible, dependable, and typing skills. Basic knoledge of Excel preferred. Candidate must be able to volunteer at least eight (8) hours per month.

  • Position Title: Indianapolis Divorce Records 1912-1930, Data Entry Assistant

  • Date & Time: Long-term position. Flexible shifts are available for volunteers during the Library's normal hours of operation Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. 4:30 p.m.
