Donate to the Library

Donations Policy

State Library & Historical Board Policy: #03-2
Application: Indiana State Library
Effective Date: February 14, 2003

General Subject: Donations

Tax dollars pay for only basic library services. Many additional purchases of library materials and equipment are made possible only with private donations.

Gifts can make the vital difference between being a good state library and becoming a truly great one. Philanthropy can help the Indiana State Library improve the services and collections.

Funds Received as gifts are placed in gift fund accounts. Gift fund accounts have been established to handle unrestricted and restricted donations.

Ways to donate to the Indiana State Library:

  • Unrestricted Donation - The donor does not specify a program to benefit from a donation to the foundation, so that the gift is assigned to an area of need. Just a few of the many Library programs in need of private funding are the procurement of genealogical research resources, Indiana newspapers on microfilm, microfilming of aging genealogy and Indiana history material, binding of library material, digitilization of Indiana and genealogical materials, digitization equipment and software.
  • Restricted Donation - The giver specifies a program or service to benefit from a donation to the foundation. Recently, restricted donations have helped fund services in assisting in the purchase of the 1930 census records and soundexes, and large print books and magazines for Hoosiers who are unable to read regular print material.
  • Planned Giving - When the Indiana State Library is included in a will or estate, funds will support services and collections for future generations of users.
  • Library Materials - The Indiana State Library welcomes materials (books, periodicals, microform, manuscripts) from individuals and groups for addition to its collection. Material donated must meet the library's selection policy and not duplicate material already on hand. The library will accept items with the understanding that all gifts become the property of the library and may be used and disposed of at the discretion of library administrators. The library cannot store books or other materials not the property of the Indiana State Library.
