Updates from Mexico

February 8, 2008

Lt. Governor Skillman

After a final farewell dinner in Veracruz on Thursday night, the entire delegation flew home to Indiana today.  During our travel, we reflected back on our productive week in Mexico and each of us shared some of our unique experiences.  We all agree that this trade mission was a success.

Indiana’s agribusiness sector has clearly left a mark on Mexico. We now have opportunities for Indiana to partner with Mexican biotech companies, an industry still facing negative public perception in their country.  Our university delegates established collaboration agreements with local universities in all three states (Mexico City, Hidalgo and Veracruz) that will provide countless opportunities for student and faculty exchanges.  In addition, our commodity and farm groups benefited from seeing firsthand the market they serve in Mexico, as the country is our second largest trading partner. It is in our best interest to connect with our Mexican counterparts and form relationships that will benefit both groups.

As a final note, what I will remember most about my time in Mexico is the people.  Everyone we met was extremely hospitable and kind.  Their national pride was always evident.  They have reason to be proud of a country so rooted in tradition and history. I look back fondly at the relationships I formed while in Mexico, and I hope to have the opportunity to host some of their representatives in Indiana soon.

Andy Miller, Indiana State Department of Commerce Director and DonVillwock, Indiana Farm Bureau President

"We have benefited from understanding the unique needs of the Mexican market, our second largest trade partner. In particular, our discussions with Mexican officials have improved Indiana's ability to better serve this market for key products like corn or pork." ~ISDA Director Andy Miller

"Once again I'm impressed with the friendly, kind people we have experienced everywhere we have been. Today we visited a very modern dairy farm in Hidalgo. This farm would match most dairies that we have in Indiana. The leaders of Hidalgo are very open to increasing our trade relationship. I think there are many opportunities that lie ahead." ~Indiana Farm Bureau President Don Villwock
