Lt. Governor Becky Skillman is committed to revitalizing Indiana's economy for the benefit of all Hoosiers. A native of southern Indiana, Becky understands the importance of bringing economic development to all regions of the state. She is a long standing champion of Indiana communities and has led the way in rebuilding our state's small cities and towns.
Becky brings a strong background in local and state government. She held county offices for 16 years and served as president of the Association of Indiana Counties. She went on to serve 12 years in the Indiana Senate, quickly rising to a position of leadership. In 2004 Becky joined Mitch Daniels in his bid to become Governor. Together, they sought to renew Indiana's economy and move the state forward. Upon election Becky became the state's 50th Lieutenant Governor.
In addition to serving as the state's second in command, Becky oversees the State Department of Agriculture, the Office of Community and Rural Affairs, the Office of Energy and Defense Development, Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority, and the Office of Tourism Development. She chairs the Indiana Counter Terrorism and Security Council.
Becky has worked closely with the business community. She served on the Board of the Bedford Urban Enterprise Association, which created economic opportunities in blighted areas of the city by building roads, recruiting new businesses, renovating buildings and constructing neighborhood parks. In addition, she was on the Board of Directors of the Bedford Federal Savings Bank. Becky has spent her career fostering economic development, particularly through entrepreneurship and small business development. In recognition of her efforts, the Indiana Chamber of Commerce awarded her the Champion of Small Business in 1995. The National Federation of Independent Business/Indiana named Becky a Guardian of Small Business in 1996. In 2007, the Indiana Minority Business Magazine gave her the Champion of Diversity Award.
Living in the shadow of NSWC Crane, Becky developed an understanding of the important role the defense sector plays in Indiana's economy. In 2005, at the request of Governor Daniels, Becky successfully championed the state's case to maintain its military bases through the federal Base Realignment and Closure process. As a result, more than 5,500 jobs were saved and 1,000 new jobs were created.
Under the leadership of Governor Daniels and Lt. Governor Skillman, Indiana has seen unprecedented progress. In their first year in office, they balanced the budget for the first time in eight years-without increasing taxes. They began to revitalize Indiana's economy, bringing tens of thousands of jobs and billions of dollars in new investment. And, they worked to make state government more efficient and more accountable to better serve Hoosiers.
Becky and her husband Steve have one son, Aaron.
