Alting, Hershman: Veteran’s Home, Purdue
University to receive upgrades, renovations
(STATEHOUSE)– Purdue University and the Indiana Veterans’ Home are hoping to proceed with plans to renovate facilities after the Senate Budget Committee is expected to give formal approval this week, with support from Sens. Ron Alting (R-Lafayette) and Brandt Hershman (R-Wheatfield).
Indiana’s State Budget Committee will meet in Valparaiso on Friday. Hershman, a State Budget Committee member, said facilities on Purdue’s West Lafayette campus and Indiana Veterans’ Home will undergo improvements and various renovations and the budget committee shared in his support.
Purdue University
“Purdue’s renovations include implementing water and energy conservation methods to reduce energy costs,” Hershman said. “The project is expected to pay itself back in less than nine years.”
Items on the agenda for Purdue University require formal approval to be included in the next two-year state budget. Items for the West Lafayette campus include:
- About $4.5 million to help implement energy conservation measures within the buildings of Brown Chemistry, Stewart Center and Civil Engineering. Energy and water conservation measures include replacing water fixtures, air handlers and mechanical components;
- $140,000 per year to authorize a lease to renew and replace an existing lease and fixed based operator agreement with Lafayette Aviation, Inc. The new lease is to expire in 2025 for $40,000 more per year;
- $60,000 per year to authorize a lease to renew and replace an existing ground lease with Purdue Research Foundation (PRF). PRF constructed an aircraft hangar on the lease ground, in turn, leased the hangar to Lafayette Aviation, Inc. The new lease is to expire in 2025 and is about $60,000 more per year; and
- More than $1.7 million to proceed with sewer maintenance.
“I support these necessary renovations needed on Purdue’s campus and believe these conservation measures will prove to be a win-win situation for the community,” Alting said.
Indiana Veterans’ Home
“The Indiana Veterans’ Home is a vital part of the area and I am proud to support these essential renovations and improvements in order to make the facility safer to live and work in,” Alting said.
Indiana’s Veterans’ Home will seek formal approval for updates and improvement projects to be included in the next-year state budget. After approval was given in 2007 for the fire alarm system renovation, about $650,000 is needed to complete upgrades.
Alting and Hershman spoke with colleagues on the Senate Budget Committee voicing their support of releasing the funds.
