Hershman named to State Budget Committee

(STATEHOUSE) – Senate leaders have asked Sen. Brandt Hershman (R-Wheatfield) to help safeguard Indiana’s fiscal health and protect taxpayer dollars as the newest advisor on the State Budget Committee.

“The State Budget Committee is an integral part of managing the state’s fiscal responsibilities and helping develop spending priorities,” said Senate President Pro Tempore David Long (R-Fort Wayne). “Senator Hershman is very capable and has outstanding credentials which will make him a great fit for this committee.”

Hershman’s background includes serving on the State Tax and Fiscal Policy Committee, the State Tax Commission and formerly serving on the Appropriations Committee. He also co-authored the recent landmark property tax reform package, House Enrolled Act 1001.

Long said the Budget Committee provides continuing legislative oversight of budget implementation. The Budget Committee meets regularly during the interim between legislative sessions. Many appropriations contained in the budget require Budget Committee review before any funds may be allotted or spent. In addition, the Budget Committee must review all state-funded construction requests — exceeding $100,000 —including state university projects. The committee also facilitates the processes of revenue forecasting, budget development and implementation.

State Budget Committee membership includes four members of the Indiana House of Representatives, four members of the Indiana Senate and the State Budget Director.

“Given the uncertain economic climate Indiana faces, the Budget Committee’s oversight role is particularly important as we work to move the state forward, strengthen the economy and safeguard taxpayer dollars," Hershman said. “Being appointed to serve on the Budget Committee with Appropriations Chairman Bob Meeks is an honor and a privilege. I appreciate the opportunity to represent my constituents and the Senate in the budget process.”

Hershman represents Senate District 7, which includes Carroll, Clinton, Howard, Jasper, Tippecanoe and White counties.
