Hershman: Lafayette area pastor offers Senate prayer

(STATEHOUSE) – State Sen. Brandt Hershman (R-Wheatfield) welcomed Lafayette area pastor Steve Viars of Faith Baptist Church to the Statehouse this week to give an opening prayer to the Senate.

“Pastor Viars is gifted in the area of ministry and I was honored to have him give an invocation in front my Senate colleagues,” Hershman said. “Prayer at the beginning of a Senate session is important to me and many of my colleagues. It was nice to have him here to help us start the session with the right tone.”

Viars has been with First Baptist church for about 20 years and in 1996 the church elected him as their new senior pastor. He oversees the staff, deacons and all of Faith ministries.

Viars said it was a privilege to live in a state that embraces religious freedom and found the climate to be very refreshing in the Senate. The Lafayette pastor said he was impressed by what he saw during the day –  how hard state government was working to find practical solutions to the challenges the state faces.
