Gov. signs Hershman’s bill to expand cheaper fueling options
Law gives more Hoosiers opportunities to access E-85 fuel
(STATEHOUSE) — Sen. Brandt Hershman (R-Wheatfield) said as fuel prices have risen again during the last month to well over $3 a gallon, motorists are hunting for cheaper fueling options.
Gov. Mitch Daniels signed legislation crafted by Hershman recognizing the benefits of using blended biofuels. Hershman’s bill may increase the number of fueling stations that use E-85 — a fuel blend of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline — across the state.
“The demand for E-85 has yet to catch up with the growing supply,” Hershman said. “This legislation will give retailers and local governments the opportunity to receive grants to invest in E-85 pumps and fuel tanks.”
According to Hershman, Indiana has been a national leader in promoting the sale of biofuels and the General Assembly passed a law in 2005 Hershman co-authored requiring state vehicles to use blended biofuels whenever possible. Currently, Indiana has about 100 of the E-85 public pumps.
“Expanding the use of biofuels will benefit the economy and our environment,” Hershman said. “As Indiana emerges as a producer of renewable fuels there should be opportunities for Hoosiers to use these cheaper fuel alternatives.”
Indiana currently offers tax breaks and incentives for those who produce and/or use biofuels. Funding for these grants come from corn checkoff funds and has no cost to Indiana taxpayers.
