Hershman: Hoosier Heartland Highway
construction to begin two years ahead of schedule
(STATEHOUSE) – Construction on the final stretch of the Hoosier Heartland Corridor is set to begin two years ahead of schedule, according to State Sen. Brandt Hershman (R-Wheatfield).
Construction is possible through Gov. Mitch Daniels’ “Major Moves” initiative, which Hershman help shepherd through the Senate as the second author.
Daniels’ announced plans to start on the Hoosier Heartland Highway’s final section in the fall of 2008 and finish in 2013. Hershman said earlier plans called for construction on the final stretch to begin in 2010 and finish in 2015.
“Indiana 25 has a history of safety issues and deadly crashes,” Hershman said. “Hoosiers have been waiting a long time for the Hoosier Heartland Corridor and the Major Moves project has made this a reality. Moving construction to this fall is great news for the safety and economic development in North Central Indiana.”
“I am pleased to have played a role in this major project for the last 15 years,” Hershman said. “It’s an investment that will make this stretch of highway an anchor for economic development and job creation for generations to come.”
Indiana’s Major Moves project includes: Bringing U.S. 31 to interstate standards, connecting Fort Wayne to Toledo through the Fort to Port Project, the extension of I-69 from Indianapolis to Evansville, and two Ohio River bridges, among hundreds of other projects.
