Drozda, Hershman: Senate recognizes a Hoosier
hero who pulled five children from burning minivan
(STATEHOUSE) – A head-on collision between a car and a minivan on an Indiana interstate brought a hero out of Greg Bugher, according to State Sens. Jeff Drozda (R-Westfield) and Brandt Hershman (R-Wheatfield).
Nicole King, a 25-year-old Noblesville woman, drove the wrong way on Interstate 465 near Allisonville Road on the northeast side of Indianapolis for 16 miles before colliding head-on with a minivan. Bugher’s family witnessed the incident and pulled over before he rushed to the burning minivan - which was on its side - to pull out five children.
Sens. Drozda and Hershman presented House Concurrent Resolution 18 in front of the full Senate this week to recognize Bugher’s actions which unanimously passed. Bugher’s quick thinking saved Branden, Courtney and Kristin Wade - and their friends Alex Stang and Chase Parker. Joy Edwards, driver of the minivan and mother of three of the children - did not survive the collision.
“Greg Bugher’s heroic acts made the difference between life and death for those children and he is a symbol of courage to all of us,” Drozda said. “It is an honor to recognize such acts of bravery and quick thinking from a fellow Hoosier in front of Senate colleagues.”
Drozda, co-sponsor of HCR 18, said Greg Bugher is a Hoosier hero whose quick actions saved five lives and he deserves the state’s recognition.
“At the time of the accident Bugher was driving with his family on a return trip from spring break and after he witnessed the horrific accident,” Hershman, co-sponsor of HCR 18, said. “He had the courage to save five lives against the odds,” Hershman said.
