    My Biography

    A tireless advocate for children, the elderly and the disabled, State Senator Connie Sipes has earned a reputation as a passionate, dedicated hard-working public servant.

    A former principal at Fairmont Elementary School in New Albany, Sipes was appointed to the State Senate in 1997 and was elected to full terms in 1998, 2002, and 2006. She was elected to serve as the Caucus Chair by the Senate Democratic Caucus in 2008.

    In addition to leadership responsibilities, Sipes serves as the ranking Democrat on the Senate Appointment and Claims Committee. She is currently a member of the Senate Education and Career Development Committee; the Tax and Fiscal Policy Committee; the Elections Committee; and the Rules and Legislative Procedure Committee.

    Sipes has also been appointed to serve on the Redistricting and Elections Committee and the Education Committee of the National Conference of State Legislatures, a bipartisan organization that serves the legislators and staffs of the nation's 50 states, its commonwealths and territories.

    Sipes is also a member of the Indiana Commission on Autism, the Committee on Childcare, the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Committee, the Select Joint Commission on Medicaid Oversight, the Commission on Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities as well as the Indiana Tourism Council.

    Sipes earned her undergraduate degree and two master's degrees in education and administration from Indiana University Southeast. She has two adult children and three grandsons and currently resides in New Albany with her husband Steve.
