A tireless advocate for children, the elderly and the disabled, State Senator Connie Sipes has earned a reputation as a passionate, dedicated hard-working public servant.
A former principal at Fairmont Elementary School in New Albany , Sipes was appointed to the State Senate in 1997 and was elected to a full term in 1998, 2002 and again in 2006.
A leading voice on education and health care issues, she currently serves as the ranking Democrat on the Senate's Education & Career Development Committee and is a member of the Tax & Fiscal Policy; Natural Resources, Transportation & Veterans Affairs; and Health & Provider Services standing committees.
Sipes is also a member of the Indiana Commission on Autism, the Committee on Childcare, the FSSA Evaluation Committee, the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Committee, the Select Joint Commission on Medicaid Oversight, the Commission on Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities as well as the Indiana Tourism Council.
Sipes earned her undergraduate degree and two master's degrees in education and administration from Indiana University Southeast. She has two adult children and two grandchildren and currently resides in New Albany with her husband Steve.
