A successful business man and respected community leader, Samuel Smith Jr. was appointed to the State Senate in 1998 and has served ever since.
A member of the Indiana Black Legislative Caucus, Smith was elected Senate Democrat Caucus Chairman in November 2007, making him the third highest ranking Democrat in the chamber. He also serves as the ranking Democrat on the Senate's Insurance & Financial Institutions and sits on the Appointments & Claims; Local Government & Elections; Judiciary; and Rules and Legislative Procedure committees.
Smith owns and operates the Divinity Funeral Home in East Chicago and is an active member of Lakeside Lodge #147, Gary Shriners, Mahomet Temple #134, Magic City Consistory #62, National Funeral Directors and Morticians Association and the Mount Herman Baptist Church in East Chicago.
A graduate of Winona State University in Winona, Minnesota, Smith continued his education at the Worsham College of Mortuary Science where he became a licensed funeral director and embalmer. A father of two, he currently resides in East Chicago with his wife Diane.
