A native of South Bend, John Broden was elected to the Indiana State Senate in November of 2000 and has gained a reputation as an effective, honest and compassionate legislator.
Serving as the ranking Democrat on the Senate’s Economic Development & Technology Committee, Broden is also a member of the Tax & Fiscal Policy; Judiciary; and Local Government & Elections standing committees.
Broden is a practicing attorney and is of counsel to the law firm of Leone Halpin, LLP.
Prior to joining the Senate, Broden served as a member of the South Bend Common Council and was the City Attorney for the city of South Bend. He also served as law clerk to Indiana Supreme Court Justice Roger O. DeBruler.
A graduate of South Bend’s Saint Joseph's High School, Broden went on to earn his undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame and his law degree from Indiana University in Bloomington. The senator is married to Josephine Marie Maternowski Broden and has three children, Ana Marie, John Francis and Charles.
