Overview
This document clarifies the clinical education requirements for an EMT course as required by 836 IAC 4-4-1(c)(1) of the EMSC rules.

Background
EMT courses are based upon an approved curriculum of the EMS Commission. This includes the clinical education component of the EMT course. The minimal clinical education requirements are set by the EMS Commission and must be included in successful course completion, but the training institution may approve hours or clinical types in addition to the minimums.

Policy
To be compliant with the basic EMT training requirement for 836 IAC 4-4-1(c)(1), all EMT courses shall include the following minimum education requirements:
(1) EMT students must perform a total of 24 hours of clinical education experience to be determined by the training institution with at least 12 of the hours being ambulance participation.
(2) EMT students must have a minimum of 10 patient assessments.
Training institutions may elect to exceed these numbers.
