FIRE PREVENTION AND BUILDING SAFETY COMMISSION
Department of Homeland Security

Written Interpretation Of the State Building Commissioner

Interpretation #: CEB-2021-03-2014 IBC-1029.1

Building or Fire Safety Law Interpreted
675 IAC 13-2.6, 2014 Indiana Building Code, Section 1029.1 General. In addition to the means of egress required by this chapter, provisions shall be made for emergency escape and rescue openings in Group R-2 occupancies in accordance with Tables 1021.2(1) and 1021.2(2) and Group R-3 occupancies. [Remainder of section omitted for lack of relevance to the issue of this interpretation request.]

Issue
Whether a sleeping room in a fire station is required to have emergency escape and rescue openings under Section 1029.1 of the 2014 Indiana Building Code (IBC).

Interpretation of the State Building Commissioner
A sleeping room in a fire station is not required to have emergency escape and rescue openings under Section 1029.1 of the 2014 IBC.

Rationale
Section 304 of the 2014 IBC places fire stations in the B occupancy category, with no requirement that any sleeping rooms present in such facilities be classified differently. Since 1029.1 limits its own applicability to R-2 and R-3 occupancies, it does not apply to fire stations.
