Building or Fire Safety Law Interpreted
675 IAC 13-2.6, 2014 Indiana Building Code, Section 1029.1 General. In addition to the
means of egress required by this chapter, provisions shall be made for
emergency escape and rescue openings in Group R-2 occupancies in accordance with Tables 1021.2(1) and 1021.2(2) and Group R-3 occupancies.
[Remainder of section omitted for lack of relevance to the issue of this interpretation request.]
Whether a sleeping room in a fire station is required to have emergency escape and rescue openings under Section 1029.1 of the 2014 Indiana Building Code (IBC).
Interpretation of the State Building Commissioner
A sleeping room in a fire station is not required to have emergency escape and rescue openings under Section 1029.1 of the 2014 IBC.
Section 304 of the 2014 IBC places fire stations in the B occupancy category, with no requirement that any sleeping rooms present in such facilities be classified differently. Since 1029.1 limits its own applicability to R-2 and R-3 occupancies, it does not apply to fire stations.
