FIRE PREVENTION AND BUILDING SAFETY COMMISSION
Department of Homeland Security

Written Interpretation of the State Building Commissioner

Interpretation #: CEB-2017-01-2014 IFC-5003.12.2

Building or Fire Safety Law Interpreted
675 IAC 22-2.5, the 2014 Indiana Fire Code, Section 5003.12.2, Exception 3: Where a property exceeds 10,000 square feet (929 m2), a group of two outdoor control areas is allowed when approved and when each control area is separated by a minimum distance of 50 feet (15 240 mm).

2014 IFC Section 5003.12.2, Exception 4: Where a property exceeds 35,000 square feet (3,252 m2), additional groups of outdoor control areas are allowed when approved and when each group is separated by a minimum distance of 300 feet (91 440 mm).

Issue
The question has arisen whether the intent of the code is as printed, with paragraphs 3 and 4 noted above as a continuation of enumerated exceptions to 5003.12.2, following Exceptions 1 and 2, or if the text as printed represents a formatting error, and the two paragraphs in question were actually intended to be a continuation of enumerated subsections to 5003.12, namely 5003.12.3 and 5003.12.4.

Interpretation of the State Building Commissioner
It is our interpretation that the printed text represents a formatting error, and the two paragraphs in question are not intended to be exceptions to 5003.12.2, but rather subsections to 5003.12, and they were simply indented too far in this printing.
