OFFICE OF THE SECRETARY OF FAMILY AND SOCIAL SERVICES

Notice of Public Comment Period for
Health Services Initiative to Support Poison Treatment, Advice, and Prevention Efforts
April 5, 2017

In accordance with public notice requirements established at 42 CFR 457.65, the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration, Office of Medicaid Policy and Planning (OMPP) publishes this notice of the health services initiative application to support poison treatment, advice, and prevention efforts.

PURPOSE

This Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) State Plan Amendment will allow the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) to receive funding from OMPP to go towards providing treatment advice to the public and healthcare providers to manage exposure to poisonous and hazardous substances through the use of a health services initiative under 42 U.S.C. § 1397ee. The funds will also be used to provide public education on poison prevention. There are approximately over 55,000 poison exposures to Hoosiers each year, and 62% involve children at 18 years of age or younger with 48% involving children at 5 years of age or younger. Currently, the ISDH has a contract with the Indiana Poison Center, which is the state's only poison center, to provide these services.
