FOR: NAMING OF THE BRIDGE OVER THE OHIO RIVER ON STATE ROAD 265 AFTER LEWIS AND CLARK
TO ALL WHOM THESE PRESENTS MAY COME, GREETINGS.
WHEREAS, this Order honors the service and history of two great American explorers by naming the new bridge connecting Indiana and Kentucky after Meriwether Lewis and William Clark;
WHEREAS, President Thomas Jefferson commissioned the expedition in 1803 that sent Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to find "the most direct & practicable water communication" from St. Louis to the Pacific Ocean, and, along the way, to map and study the great American Eden;
WHEREAS, William Clark lived in Clarksville, Indiana when he was recruited by Meriwether Lewis to join the expedition in 1803;
WHEREAS, Lewis and Clark met on October 14, 1803 at the Falls of the Ohio in Indiana where the co-captains recruited the core of their team from Indiana and Kentucky;
WHEREAS, it is appropriate to honor the important role that Indiana and Kentucky natives played in exploring, mapping, and categorizing the "face of the country" and the Pacific Northwest;
WHEREAS, construction of the new East End bridge began in 2012 as part of the Ohio River Bridges project, a collaboration between the state of Indiana and the Commonwealth of Kentucky, to build a new East End crossing near Utica, Indiana and reconstruct the downtown Ohio River crossing at Louisville, Kentucky
WHEREAS, this bridge, like the Lewis and Clark expedition, will connect people and spur economic development and commerce and is the result of tremendous teamwork, organization, and an unflagging pursuit of success.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Michael R. Pence, by virtue of the authority vested in me as Governor of the State of Indiana, do hereby order that:
This bridge over the Ohio River on State Road 265 be named and known as the "Lewis and Clark Bridge" and further order the Indiana Department of Transportation to execute all documents and signage to effectuate the same. The National Bridge Inventory number for the bridge is 080663, and the INDOT structure number is (265)I265-13-10231.
