EXECUTIVE ORDER: 14-09

FOR: THE RENAMING OF THE BRIDGE OVER CLIFTY CREEK ON STATE ROAD 31 AFTER THE "IRON MEN OF METZ"


TO ALL WHOM THESE PRESENTS MAY COME, GREETINGS.

WHEREAS, this Order honors the service of the "Iron Men of Metz" by naming the bridge over Clifty Creek on State Road 31 in Columbus, Indiana after them;

WHEREAS, the men of the 95th Army Division, 377th Company fought in France during WWII;

WHEREAS, following fierce battles to gain control of Metz, France, and defend the town from enemy attacks, the soldiers of the 377th Infantry became known as the "Iron Men of Metz";

WHEREAS, Charles B. (Red) Whittington, a patriot and Hoosier hero who currently resides in Columbus, Indiana, was a member of the 95th Army Division 377th Company, and was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, the Purple Heart with one Oak Leaf Cluster, and the European Theater of Operations campaign ribbon with two Battle Stars;

WHEREAS, it is appropriate to honor Charles B. (Red) Whittington in his hometown for his service and sacrifice as one of the "Iron Men of Metz";

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Michael R. Pence, by virtue of the authority vested in me as Governor of the State of Indiana, do hereby order that:

The Indiana Department of Transportation name the bridge over Clifty Creek on State Road 31 as the "Iron Men of Metz Memorial Bridge." The National Bridge Inventory number for the bridges is 080010, and the INDOT structure number is 031-03-08283.

IN TESTIMONY WHEREOF, I, Michael R. Pence, have hereunto set my hand and caused to be affixed the Great Seal of the State of Indiana on this 4th day of June 2014.
