EXECUTIVE ORDER: 13-19

FOR: THE RENAMING OF THE BRIDGE SPANNING THE EAST FORK OF THE WHITE RIVER IN COLUMBUS, INDIANA AFTER ROBERT N. STEWART


TO WHOM ALL THESE PRESENTS MAY COME, GREETINGS.

WHEREAS, the intent of this Order is to honor the service and good works of Robert N. Stewart, former mayor of the city of Columbus and Bartholomew County native, by naming the bridge that spans the East Fork of the White River in Columbus after him;

WHEREAS, the multi-cabled bridge that spans the East Fork of the White River serves as the gateway to the downtown of Columbus and is a city entrance from Indiana 46 West and Interstate 65;

WHEREAS, the establishment of said bridge was a result of the Front Door Project, which Robert N. Stewart initiated during his mayoral administration and which effectively opened the area for tremendous business development;

WHEREAS, Robert N. Stewart served a record-breaking number of mayoral terms and presided over an economic, diversity, and public partnership transformation of the city of Columbus;

WHEREAS, Robert N. Stewart helped create over 10,000 new jobs for the people of Columbus through the attraction of new companies and through the encouragement of expansion of long-established community businesses;

WHEREAS, Robert N. Stewart helped create the Ethnic Expo, which attracts tens of thousands of visitors to the city and provides outreach to the different ethnic groups that reside in Columbus;

WHEREAS, Robert N. Stewart encouraged and developed public and private partnerships with executives from major corporations in the city and community business leaders and helped create Focus 2000, which led to the betterment of Columbus by creating and nurturing a healthy arts community, creating and supporting a community-wide substance support group, beautifying and expanding the downtown park, and earning the title of being named an All American City in 1994; and

WHEREAS, it is appropriate and necessary to honor an individual whose public service to the city of Columbus was remarkable and noteworthy.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Michael R. Pence, by virtue of the authority vested in me as Governor of the State of Indiana, do hereby order that:

The Indiana Department of Transportation name the SR 46 East bound bridge that spans the East Fork of the White River and serves as a gateway to the downtown of Columbus after Robert N. Stewart. The National Bridge Inventory number for the bridge is 010335, and the INDOT structure number is 046-03-07495.
