EXECUTIVE ORDER: 12-01

FOR: DECLARING A DISASTER EMERGENCY IN CLARK, GIBSON, HARRISON, JEFFERSON, POSEY, RIPLEY, SCOTT, SHELBY, VANDERBURGH, WARRICK, AND WASHINGTON COUNTIES, INDIANA, DUE TO NUMEROUS TORNADOS AND SEVERE STORMS


TO ALL TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS MAY COME, GREETINGS:

WHEREAS, IC 10-14-3-12 provides that the governor shall declare a disaster emergency by executive order if he determines that a disaster has occurred or that the occurrence or threat of a disaster is imminent; and

WHEREAS, on March 2, 2012, severe storms with high winds and numerous tornados caused numerous deaths and injuries and widespread damage to homes, businesses, schools, and public property in Clark, Gibson, Harrison, Jefferson, Posey, Ripley, Scott, Shelby, Vanderburgh, Warrick, and Washington counties; and

WHEREAS, the storms and tornados caused extensive power outages throughout Indiana, with at least 19,400 outages at its peak, with severe outages in devastated areas, including Henryville and Marysville in Clark County and New Pekin in Washington County, which are without power. Natural gas has been shut off in Henryville due to severe damage to a transmission line near Henryville, and the area supplied by the Clark County REMC is without power due to damage to the Clark County facilities.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mitchell E. Daniels, Jr., by virtue of the authority vested in me as Governor of the State of Indiana, do hereby:

DECLARE that a state of disaster emergency exists in Clark, Gibson, Harrison, Jefferson, Posey, Ripley, Scott, Shelby, Vanderburgh, Warrick, and Washington counties, Indiana and, while this disaster emergency continues, I hereby invoke all emergency powers available to me under IC 10-14-3; and

ORDER the Indiana Department of Homeland Security, having already begun implementation of the State Emergency Plan, to provide needed emergency services to the damaged areas impacted by this disaster emergency;

ORDER the Indiana Department of Homeland Security and supporting agencies to request food, water, shelter, and generator resources from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to bring needed aid and resources to the devastated areas of Indiana.

This declaration of disaster emergency was in effect beginning March 2, 2012, and continues.
