Title: Interpretation that conditioned, or semi-conditioned, post-framed (wood) buildings are required to comply with provisions of the 2010 Indiana Energy Conservation Code (2010 IECC) that apply to wood-framed buildings.
Purpose: To clarify that all conditioned-, or semi-conditioned-, post-framed (wood) buildings are required to comply with provisions of the 2010 Indiana Energy Conservation Code that apply to wood-framed buildings.
Interpretation: The Building Law Compliance Officer interprets the following sections of the 2010 Indiana Energy Conservation Code as establishing that all conditioned-, or semi-conditioned-, post-framed (wood) buildings are required to meet the requirements of the 2010 IECC that apply to wood-framed buildings.
Section 3.2 Definitions: In this section, the following definitions are provided:
"wood-framed and other walls: see wall."
"wall: that portion of the building envelope, including opaque area an fenestration, that is vertical or tilted at an angle of 60 degrees from horizontal or greater. This includes above- and below-grade walls, between floor spandrels, peripheral edges of floors, and foundation walls. For the purpose of determining building envelope requirements, the classifications are defined as follows:

metal building wall: a wall whose structure consist of metal spanning membes [sic] supported by steel structural members (i.e., does not include spandrel glass or metal panels in curtain wall systems).
steel-framed wall: a wall with a cavity (insulated or otherwise) whose exterior surfaces are separated by steel framing members (i.e., typical steel stud walls and curtain wall systems).
wood-framed and other walls: all other wall types, including wood stud walls."
In view of the above definitions, the walls of conditioned-, or semi-conditioned-, post-framed (wood) buildings shall be considered as "wood-framed and other walls" for the purpose of the 2010 IECC.
Table 5.5-4 Building Envelope Requirements for Climate Zone 4 (A, B, C)* – In Table 5.5-5, the first column entitled, "Opaque Elements", provides for the analysis of building elements by their location within the building system(s). The first row from the top is entitled, "Roofs", and provides specifically for "Attic and Other". In addition, the second row from the top is entitled, "Walls, Above-Grade", and provides specifically for "Wood-Framed and Other".
These categories will be used in order to analyze the construction systems of post-framed (wood) Buildings that are conditioned-, or semi-conditioned-, in meeting the energy code requirements for the 2010 IECC. Other specified construction systems indicated in these row categories do not apply to post-framed (wood) buildings.

Other specified construction systems indicated in these row categories do not apply to post-framed (wood) buildings. Additionally, for nonresidential applications, continuous insulation is required in accordance with the 2010 IECC.
Section 5.8.1.2 Compliance with Manufacturer's Requirements. As stipulated in this section, all insulation materials shall be insulated as per the manufacturer's requirements for a conditioned, or semi-conditioned, Post-Framed (wood) Building. The exception to this section applies to metal buildings only.
