Title: Interpretation of Sections R106, R403.1.1 and Table R403.1 of the 2005 Indiana Residential Code (675 IAC 14-4.2).

Purpose: To assist code enforcement officials, design professionals, building owners and tenants, and the general public in understanding the applicability of the certification by a design professional (as defined in 675 IAC 12-6) to which their professional seal is applied with respect to requirements for minimum footing widths.

Interpretation: Table R403.1 prescribes the minimum footing widths for various structural designs. Pursuant to Section R106, an owner or other person who has a legal interest in the project may offer alternative methods or materials for compliance with Section R403.1.1 and Table 403.1. The certification of a design professional to which their professional seal is applied is stating that the presumptive or actual soil bearing capacity of the project soil will not be exceeded is sufficient for purposes of compliance with all of Section R106.
