With the 2009 legislative session less than four months away, House Republicans are working hard to prepare for the challenges that lay ahead at the Indiana Statehouse in January. From the state budget to illegal immigration, from property taxes to education issues, our members are among those taking time this summer to study issues in interim study committees.
House Republicans have important roles on several committees, and other members of our caucus have attended meetings to stay abreast of the issues and to assist constituents. Our members have specialized knowledge or intense interest in the areas covered by their committees.
Among the committees meeting this summer to address issues important to Hoosiers are the interim study committees on immigration issues, education matters, learner’s permits and graduated driver’s licenses, alcoholic beverage issues and dialysis coverage. Members will listen to testimony, ask questions and consider many factors involving these areas.
These committees were created to address specific issues anticipated to appear — or reappear — in the 2009 session.
Interim study committees give our part-time legislators the ability to discuss and consider key issues year-round. They are an essential part of the legislative process, helping members be better prepared for the upcoming sessions. The work of the committees, which usually include bipartisan membership of the House and Senate as well as other experts in the fields, is often important in the drafting of future legislation.
