State Representative Bruce Borders was first elected to the Indiana House of Representatives in 2004. He currently represents House District 45, which includes portions of Greene, Daviess, Sullivan, Knox and Vigo Counties
Rep. Borders is a member of the Local Government Committee, Insurance Committee, and the Statutory Committee on Interstate and International Cooperation. He has actively promoted an updated energy policy, focusing on biodiesel, ethanol, and coal gasification issues that have a direct impact on the economy of southern Indiana. Since Rep. Borders has taken office, over six different ethanol plants have started construction, in addition to three biodiesel plants currently being built in our state. A coal gasification plant and new training dollars have also been announced for southwest Indiana.
As a former Mayor of Jasonville, Rep. Borders has been a strong advocate for the small communities of southern Indiana. Rep. Borders fought for property tax relief to offset the expected 24 percent increase expected to hit Hoosiers this year. Unfortunately, property owners will see only limited relief in the form of rebates proposed by the House Majority. This so-called relief was an extreme disappointment to Rep. Borders and many of his colleagues, as Indiana citizens will have to bear the full brunt of the high increases without relief before receiving rebate checks months after the property taxes are due.
A firm believer in small government, Rep. Borders plans to continue ongoing work on legislation that would allow small cities and towns to handle their own ordinances without having to use the court systems. This would increase efficiency by removing considerable bureaucratic red tape and would give the power back to the local communities.
Rep. Borders has also been a strong supporter of family values, an advocate for pro-life issues, and he is a staunch supporter of a constitutional amendment that defines marriage as a union between one man and one woman.
Rep. Borders has achieved a near 100-percent voting record during his time as a state legislator. While many representatives miss a couple votes out of a few hundred during each legislative session, Rep. Borders’ commitment to his community and belief in representative democracy helped him hit this high mark.
Along with being a proud husband and father, Rep. Borders is a lifelong resident of southern Indiana and has been extremely involved in the community. An active church leader, Rep. Borders is the leader of the Royal Rangers and a member of the First Assembly of God Church.
