State Representative Amos Thomas grew up on a farm two miles west of Bellmore in Parke County. He currently practices law for Thomas and Thomas, a Brazil law firm owned by him and his brother, John. His law firm has represented numerous organizations, including the Brazil Planning Commission, Clay County Commissioners, Van Buren Township School Corporation, Jackson Township Trustee, Clay Civic Memorial Foundation, and various Township Trustees.
He graduated from Indiana University in 1952 with a degree in government and business. Upon graduation, he served in the U.S. Air Force in Alaska for two years during the Korean War. This was followed by duration in the Indiana Air National Guard. He received a JD degree from Indiana University School of Law in 1956.
He has been an active member of the Brazil Rotary Club for 50 years, maintaining perfect attendance since becoming a member. During this period, he served as President, Secretary, and a member of the Board of Directors. He has received numerous Rotary Club awards, including the Paul Harris Award and the Rotary International Commitment to Service Award. In addition, Rep. Thomas participated in a Group Study Exchange with the Rotary Club that allowed him to travel overseas to Wales, U. K.
Rep. Thomas has remained active in his community, formerly serving as Chairman of the Clay County Red Cross Committee and coaching numerous sports teams, including Little League baseball, YMCA football and basketball, and Church League Basketball. In addition, he was a former 4-H Club member, Boy Scouts Cubmaster and Chairman of Troop Committee District Commissioner (Boy Scouts), and member of the Clay County Farm Bureau.
During the 2007 legislative session, Rep. Thomas coauthored House Enrolled Act 1034, a law providing increased funding for covered bridges. Most of the covered bridges in Indiana are located in Parke County, with a few in Putnam County. This law will help to preserve these beautiful structures that are an historical treasure in the local community.
Rep. Rep. Thomas resides in Brazil and is a member of the Brazil United Methodist Church. Amos and his late wife, Mary, have six children and 12 grandchildren.
