2012 Legislative Focus: Indiana's Smoking Ban
The Indiana General Assembly accomplished great things this session, and one of those pieces of legislation includes my authored bill, House Enrolled Act (HEA) 1149, which promotes Hoosier’s health through a statewide smoking ban. With hundreds of Hoosiers dying every year from secondhand smoke, it is extremely important to take a stand to protect the health of Indiana.The new law will make Indiana smoke free.
The smoking ban prohibits smoking in public places,enclosed areas of places of employment, and within eight feet of a public entrance to a public place.However, there are some exemptions such as bars and casinos, but I am glad we could take a step forward and pass this legislation.Hoosiers’ health is a priority of the General Assembly and passing the smoking ban is now a reality for Indiana.
This law goes a long way to make our state smoke-free and continues to protect Hoosier workers from the harmful effects of secondhand smoke. If we can improve the health of just one Hoosier by enacting a smoking ban, I believe we have taken a step forward. The most important thing we can do as leaders in our communities is to protect the health, safety and welfare of our citizens.
