Community Activities: State Representative Eric Gutwein offers his support to the Rensselaer Summer Swim Team and USA Swimming programs, Mr. Cover’s 8th grade student trip to Washington D.C. and is a long time supporter of the Republican Party on the local, state, and federal levels.
In November 2002, Eric A. Gutwein was elected to be the state representative for the people of House District 16, which encompasses Cass, Fulton, Jasper, Pulaski, and White Counties.
As Chair of the Agriculture and Rural Development Committee, Representative Gutwein made Indiana’s agricultural sector a priority by creating the Indiana State Department of Agriculture during the 2005 legislative session. Prior to its creation, Indiana was one of four states without a department of agriculture. Believing that Indiana has a rich agricultural background, Rep. Gutwein felt that too many responsibilities were scattered throughout different commissions and agencies. Now that it is all under one agency, Indiana has a more productive advocate for agriculture.
Prior to becoming a full time state representative, Rep. Gutwein was the president and CEO of many businesses including Fred Gutwein and Sons, Incorporated, Flora Seeds, FG and S Trucking, and Indiana Small Plots.
Rep. Gutwein resides in Rensselaer with his wife, Cyndi Amster Gutwein, and he has five children and nine grandchildren. He is also a long time supporter of the Republican Party on local, state, and federal levels. In addition, he is a member of the Rotary Club and the Saint Joseph 's College Council of Fellows.
