Legislature delivers property tax relief—with some reservations

The Indiana General Assembly passed House Enrolled Act (HEA) 1001 on March 14. HEA 1001 delivers immediate property tax relief to Indiana taxpayers and includes some fundamental changes in the state's tax structure.

The governor has now signed HEA 1001 into law.

While this property tax relief compromise gained strong support from many areas of the state, many legislators expressed reservations about the bill's impact upon some of their local governments. Republicans and Democrats voted for and against the final version of the bill.

House Speaker B. Patrick Bauer issued a statement outlining the positive provisions of HEA 1001—along with an expression of concern about the possible impact of future events upon the state.

Healthy Indiana Plan applications available online

During the 2007 legislative session, the General Assembly enacted a bipartisan plan—the Healthy Indiana Plan—to make available better health coverage for thousands of Hoosier adults and children.

Applications for this health care-improvement initiative are now available online from the Indiana Family & Social Services Administration (FSSA).

FSSA began reviewing completed applications on Dec. 17, with coverage available in January 2008.
